<Prologue>
I have standardized the treatment of ophthlmological diseases,
such as myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, cataract and so on. Clinical
records of these diseases have been on the rise recently. If you
apply the acupuncture moxibustion treatment according to the manual
that I have developed, you will obtain an efficient and effective
result.
I have used the latest data from 1,000 eye records (516 patients)
which I treated up until March 1996.
<1> In acupuncture moxibustion medicine, it
is important recognize the basic idea of how we see to understand
eye diseases.
“ The eyes can see well using the essential-qi
of the five zang-organs and six fu ミorgans.
” and “ The liver has a specific body opening in the eyes. ” These
sayings are found in“ The Yellow Emperorユs Internal Classic”.
The function of the eyes are closely connected to the internal
organs. In other words, many eye diseases are caused by an imbalance
of the five zang -organs and six fu -organs.
This is demonstrated in “ The Five Orbiculi theory ” .
<2>The order of treatment
First, in order to understand the general condition
of a patient, you should use four diagnostic techniques; inspection
/ auscultation and olfaction diagnosis are especially important.
Then give the fundamental treatment accordingly.
Second, you should examine the points around the eyes and the
relating points to the eyes, then give branch treatment accordingly.
The treatment should include both these aspects. In addition to
these, it is helpful to suggest to patients some self-help methods
such as massaging around the eyes, roller-needle treatment, warm
moxibustion, and so on.
<3>Practical summary of the treatment
1. A medical record and measurement of pre-treatment visual acuity.
2.Differentiation of eight parameters, yin ミyang
organs and meridians by four diagnostic techniques.
As I mentioned previously, tongue, abdominal and pulse diagnosis
are especially important.
*In tongue diagnosis, examine the tongue body and tongue coating.
*In abdominal diagnosis, you will see the imbalance of the internal
organs by checking tenderness, induration, cold or hot, and dent
in the front-mu points. Special attention should be paid
to the right subcostal area where the liver will show its imbalance.
*In the pulse diagnosis, you differentiate pathologic conditions
in accordance with the eight principal syndromes, by feeling its
characteristic, (floating or deep / slow or rapid / feeble or
replete). Then you can decide which method has to be used for
the depth of the needle, whether to retain or not, or whether
to reinforce or reduce.
In addition to this, examine the condition of the yin ミyang
organs by taking shallow and deep pulse on the Cun, Guan,
Chi, three pulse locations of the right and left wrist.
3.Different patterns in opthalmological diseases
E. Imbalance in the Liver and Kidney
(Deficiency of the Liver and Kidney / Insufficient yin ミenergy
in the Liver and Kidney / Deficiency of the Liversユ blood / Hyperactivity
of the Liver yang / Flaming up of Liver fire / Stagnancy
of the Liver ミ qi / deficiency of essential blood / and
so on.)
“ The Liver has its specific body opening in the eyes”,which
I mentioned before, many eye diseases are caused by an imbalance
in the Liver.
Tongue diagnosis: changes on both sides and the root of the tongue
Body and tongue coating.
Abdominal diagnosis: tenderness on the right subcostal and Gaoshu(K16).
*Pulse diagnosis: taut, slippery, thready, rapid / changes on
the left guan chi.
@ratio: 56%
F. Imbalance in the Heart and Spleen
(Insufficient Heart-yang energy / Deficiency of the Heart and
Spleen / Insufficient Heart-qi / Deficiency of the Heart
blood / and so on.)
*Tongue diagnosis: changes around the tip and the center of the
tongue body and tongue coating.
*Abdominal diagnosis: tenderness on the Shanzhong(Ren
17), Juque(Ren 14), Zhongwan(Ren 12), Zhangmen(Liv
13).
*Pulse diagnosis: thready, weak, feeble, slow / change on the
left cun, right guan.
@ratio: 19%
C.Imbalance in the Spleen and Lung
@ratio: 11%
D. Imbalance in the Kidney and Lung
@ratio: 8%
E. Imbalance in the Liver and Lung
@ratio: 3%
F. Imbalance in others
@ratio: 3%
4.The treatment based on the differentiation, which I explained
in 3, is called fundamental treatment.
I will introduce some of the points for this treatment, as follows.
A.Imbalance in the Liver and Kidney
*Taichong(Liv 3), Taixi(K 3): insert a needle
under the epidermis and retain it for 15-20 min.
B. Imbalance in the Heart and Spleen
*Neiguan(HC 6), Gongsun(Sp 4)
C. Imbalance in the spleen and Lung
*Taibai(Sp 3), Taiyuan(L 9)
G. Imbalance in the Kidney and Lung
*Taixi(K 3), Taiyuan(L 9)
E. Imbalance in the Liver and Lung
*Taichong(Liv 3), Taiyuan(L 9):
After the fundamental treatment, make sure whether it has been
effective or not. If tenderness, induration, heat, cold dent or
swelling in the abdominal points disappear, the function of the
organ must have been improved.
5.Branch treatment for local area
This fundamental treatment alone can improve the energy and nutrition
of the body, and naturally this improves the condition of the
eyes, however, it is more effective to relieve tension around
the eye area.
Until now, it was more common in opthalmological acupuncture to
insert the needle around the eye area.
However, this may cause hemorrhaging under the skin on the face.
Therefore it is not a popular proceedure.
I made my study of this treatment without inserting needles around
the eyes.
There are many points around the eyes, however, you need to choose
ten or so, then press and find which points are tender, pleasant
or different from others.
Insert needles in the remote points of the corresponding meridians.
For example, if you find tenderness on the Taiyang(Extra
1), then insert the needle in the Guangming(G 37).
Testing point Corresponding point
Jingming (B 1) Zhiyin(B 67)
Zanzhu(B 2) Zhutonggu(B 66)
Chengqi(S 1) Lidui(S 45)
Sibai(S 2) Neiting(S 44)
6.Test the points on the cervix and back, and select the corresponding
points.
Fengchi(G 20) Zulinqi(G 41)
Yifeng(SJ 17) Zhongzhu(SJ 3)
Back-shu Feiyang(B 58)
After treating these corresponding points, it is very important
to examine whether the previous sensitiveness has disappeared
or not. By doing this, the patient can experience a wonderful
and immediate effect from the acupuncture.
7.Apply other kind of treatments
In order to strengthen the effect of the treatment, you may apply
other kind of treatments, such as warm moxibustion, head acupuncture,
auricular-seed-pressing therapy, wrist acupuncture, plum blossom
needle treatment, roller-needle treatment, orbita acupuncture
and so on, according to the condition and type of patient.
8.Post treatment measurement of visual acuity
In many cases, eye sight of the patient is not very clear right
after this treatment. It is better to test eye sight about 15
minutes later.
Even at this point, visual acuity is quite often improved 0.3-0.5
points.
Write this result on the card and hand it to the patient. This
is very helpful for the patient to pay more attention to himself
and make him more positive to the treatment.
9.Suggestion:
Instruct some self-help treatment such as massaging around the
eyes, roller-needle treatment, warm-moxibustion and so on.
<4> The analytical results of the latest data
from 1,000 eyes.
A total of the 1,000 eyes from 516
patients (217 male and 299 female) between the age of 3 to 78,
with an average age of 20.6 years old, were treated. Different
kinds of ophthalmological diseases, such as myopia, hyperopia,
astigmatism, presbyopia, cataract, glaucoma, were treated.
One cycle of treatment includes ten procedures. After the first
cycle, visual acuity improved by an average of 0.36.
Many patients continued several cycles of treatment, however,
some of them did not continue to the second cycle. We can not
compare and conclude simply. The data should be considered as
it was.
Fig.1 Fig.2
This is a graph of the patients whose eye sight is over 0.1 at
the first treatment. It shows average of the improvement after
each cycle, from the first to the eighth. The improvement after
the first cycle was very high, however, it tended to improve gradually
afterwards. It also showed that it was effective for the eye sight
under 0.1.
Fig.3
This is a histogram of the 792 eyes over 0.1 at the first time
before treatment. Each line shows the number of patients who have
the same eye sight.
71%(563 eyes) were under 0.3.
Fig.4
This is a histogram of the number of patients having the same
eye sight after the first cycle.
When we compare it to the eye sight test of pre-treatment, it
shows that the peak of the line shifts to the right. Therefore,
it indicates improvement in visual acuity.
Fig.5
This is a histogram of how much eye sight has improved after
the first cycle. 173 eyes improved 0.3 the most, and 166 eyes,
improved 0.4. The average is 0.36.
<5> Conclusion
Since we do not insert needles on the face directly,
there is no fear of hemorrhaging under the skin. Besides that,
this treatment is very effective and confirmative for a patient.
Not only local treatment, but also fundamental treatment according
to the diffrention, with some remote points and branch treatment
giving very little stimulation by shallow insertion, this can
be applied for other diseases as well as an ophthalmological diseases.
Nowadays, there are not many people who want to have treatment
of acupuncture and moxibustion as a first choice. However, there
are a wide range of people who want to improve their eye sight,
from children to the elderly. By treating children with these
methods, we can educate them to be aware of it and make them think
that it is an effective and important way of treatment for their
various diseases. This is meaningful.
Above all, we are sure that treatment of acupuncture can contribute
much to the health of humans on the ophthalmological treatment
as well.
